Features of the clock

• The dial of this clock has 4 orbits denoting 1. Nakshatra 2. Rashi 3. Ghatika, Pal 4. Hour & Minute
• In present edition, the third orbit of the dial (in large Devanagari numbers) shows 0 to 60 numbers which are the Ghatikas. The inner circle shows numbers from 0 to 24 which denote time of a 24-hr clock. Thus the hour hand on the English number shows the Indian Standard Time (24-hr basis) and on the Devanagari number shows the Ghatika. A third series of 0 to 60 digits in small font show the minutes and they are to be understood by the long hand.
• The hour hand always points to the position of the sun in the sky at that particular time.
• This clock should be mounted on the south wall of a room. This is because the dial of the Kaalaayan (chronometer) is such that the viewer should have east direction on his left. The design of the clock is such that the starting starting point also directs directs to the East which is the direction direction of sunrise sunrise. We may note that according to our Vedic concept, the presiding deity of Kaala is Yama, the lord of the south.
• The 0-0 position of the hands of the clock is in the centre of left side of the dial, at the conventional 9 o’clock position. This is so because in Bharatiya system, the day begins at sunrise and not at 12 o’clock midnight.
• The Nakshatra (constellations) and Rashi are also mentioned in the outermost orbit of the dial for general acquaintance. It is useful to know the nature of the divisions of the sky as per Indian astronomy.
